Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective contraceptive options gaining popularity for their convenience and reliability. At East Ryde Doctors, we offer expert guidance and services for both insertion and removal of IUDs, helping women make informed choices about their reproductive health.

What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It's a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) method that offers convenience and effectiveness without requiring daily attention.

Types of IUDs

1. Copper IUD (Non-Hormonal)

The Copper IUD is a small device wrapped with a fine copper wire around a plastic frame. It works by releasing copper ions, which are toxic to sperm and eggs, preventing fertilization. This type of IUD does not contain hormones and does not affect the normal female cycle, although periods may become heavier. There are two versions available, lasting between 5 to 10 years, and can be removed at any time.

2. Hormonal IUD (Mirena™)

The Hormonal IUD, known under the brand Mirena™, is also T-shaped and placed inside the uterus. It releases a low dose of progestogen hormone over about 5 years. This hormone thickens cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm movement, and can make periods lighter or even stop entirely. The Hormonal IUD is highly effective, with a 99.8% success rate, and can be removed at any time.

Effectiveness

Both types of IUDs are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly, making them one of the most reliable contraceptive options available.

Procedure Costs

For Medicare card holders, the cost of IUD insertion at East Ryde Doctors is approximately $250 out of pocket. It's important to note that the cost of the IUD itself typically ranges from $40 to $120, depending on the specific type chosen, and must be purchased separately from a pharmacy. Your doctor will discuss the options with you and provide a prescription for the chosen IUD.
