Better Access Mental Health Care Program

Better Access to Mental Health Care is an Australian government initiative aimed at improving access to mental health services for individuals through Medicare. Key points include:

  • Medicare Rebates: Individuals can receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year with eligible mental health professionals, including psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists.

  • Types of Services: The initiative covers a range of mental health services, including assessment, therapy sessions (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy), and psychiatric consultations.

  • Eligibility: To access Better Access services, individuals must be referred by a general practitioner (GP). They must also have a Mental Health Treatment Plan in place.

  • Conditions Covered: The initiative supports treatment for various mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, eating disorders, and more.

  • Telehealth: Expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth options allow individuals to access mental health services remotely, ensuring continuity of care.

  • Community Support: Better Access encourages collaboration between healthcare providers to offer holistic support and long-term management of mental health conditions.

The Better Access initiative aims to reduce the financial barriers associated with mental health care, improve treatment outcomes, and promote mental well-being across Australia.
