This article refers to type 2 diabetes only.
At the bottom of this article there is a RISK CALCULATOR.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is when the cells in the body have developed a inability to react to insulin and therefore are unable to bring blood sugar levels down.
It is a disease which can affect many parts of your body and is caused by long term HIGH blood sugar levels.
High blood sugar levels are bad for your body for many reasons and can cause many long-term complications if this is left untreated.
Complications include:
Heart Problems (like heart attack and stroke)
Nerve Issues (like nerve damage that can cause tingling or numbness in the feet, that can lead to ulcers and amputation)
Vascular Issues (such as vision loss and kidney disease)
Often, in the earlier stages of the disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus may not have symptoms, so you may not realise that you have it. Your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is related to some things you can change - such as your lifestyle choices, but can also be related to some things you can not change - such as your age, family history and genetics.
You can reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus by making healthy choices in your lifestyle, such as maintaining a healthy weight with good dietary choices and exercising regularly.
You can find out if you are at risk of type 2 diabetes by doing a test called
This test asks you questions about your age, gender, family history and then about your health to determine if you are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a useful tool to use.
If you are worried about your risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus then please make an appointment with your usual GP to discuss this in more detail.
