Meningococcal Vaccination for Year 10 Students – Is There More to Consider?

If your child is in Year 10, you may already be aware of the school-based vaccination program, which includes protection against Meningococcal ACWY.
However, there is another strain, Meningococcal B, that is not currently included in the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for this age group.
Meningococcal disease is uncommon but can become serious very quickly.
Different vaccines protect against different strains, which is why some families choose to explore additional options beyond the school program.
The Meningococcal B vaccine is available on the private market and may provide broader protection when used alongside the ACWY vaccine.
Every individual’s situation is different, so we recommend having a conversation with your GP to understand:
What protection your child has already received
Whether additional vaccination may be appropriate
The timing and cost of private vaccines
