Shared Antenatal Care

Most of our doctors are accredited to provide care under the specialist antenatal shared care program offered under the Northern Sydney local area.

Antenatal care offers expectant mothers the flexibility of receiving pregnancy care through both their local general practitioner (GP) and a hospital or specialist maternity service. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive and convenient prenatal care while maintaining close ties to community-based healthcare.

Key Points relating to Shared Antenatal Care:

  1. Collaborative Approach: Shared antenatal care involves regular visits with both a GP and a hospital or specialist maternity service. This allows for continuity of care and access to specialized services as needed.

  2. Convenience: Care is delivered closer to home, minimizing travel and offering flexible appointment scheduling that fits into your routine.

  3. Comprehensive Care: GPs provide routine check-ups, screenings, and basic antenatal care, while hospitals or specialists offer advanced services such as ultrasound scans, genetic testing, and management of high-risk pregnancies.

  4. Patient-Centered: Expectant mothers have a say in their care plan, with the ability to discuss preferences and concerns with both their GP and maternity care providers.

  5. Education and Support: Shared care includes educational resources, guidance on healthy pregnancy practices, and preparation for childbirth and postnatal care.

  6. Cost and Accessibility: Shared antenatal care is often covered by Medicare, making it a cost-effective option for comprehensive prenatal care.

In summary, shared antenatal care combines the expertise of GPs and maternity specialists to provide expectant mothers with personalized, convenient, and comprehensive prenatal care that promotes maternal and fetal health throughout pregnancy.
